Being in a position of leadership creates an aura of power around you. More often than not, this means that the people you’re leading will tend to act a certain way when in your presence. To be an effective leader therefore, you have a responsibility to be intentional about assuming a posture of humility.
One way to accomplish this is to learn to go out of your way to attribute every compliment you receive for your team’s effort onto your team members. Make every member of the group you’re leading know how valuable they are, and that you’re not out to receive the credit for their efforts.
Harry S. Truman once said, “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” When the people you’re leading realize that they have an individualized voice in your group and that you’re humble enough not to accept credit for the efforts of the group, they will go out of their way to advance the goals you set for the group.
In conclusion, work hard to show your people that you have their best interest at heart. Show them that when the spotlight is on you, you are not afraid to bring them along with you. When you receive credit, be intentional about passing it on.
