I recently completed my first trail race ever, the Lookout Mountain 20 miler. This was after my failed attempt at my first race, the Snakebite 50k. After this race, I was completely dejected but I reflected on the things I didn’t do well, retooled by getting a coach and developing a game plan and re-attacked by signing up for my next race. I was ready to succeed.
During the Lookout Mountain 20 miler, I was following my game plan to a “T”. I was running and walking, right on schedule, just as my coach designed. I felt great! What happened next though, was very interesting. An older gentleman, and seasoned runner came running beside me.
He asked, “What do you keep walking for?” I explained that this was a part of my strategy for this race that my coach and I decided on. He looked at me, and said, “You need to stop being a slave to your clock! Let it rip man! This is a great patch for running! Let’s go!” After that, he disappeared around the bend.
I contemplated his advice for a moment. This was a great downhill section. It was easy trail too. Was I missing the opportunity to really clear some distance? I mean, obviously he is a better runner cause he’s crushing me. Should I listen?
Then it came to me. The inspiration for this article. As much as I appreciated his advice, and I’m sure he was truly wanting to help. I needed to Run My Race.
Everyone will always have an opinion about what you are doing, and how you are doing it. What typically comes with everyone’s opinion, is their need and want to share it with you. Now this isn’t completely horrible. There can be great wisdom in the counsel of others, but don’t let the opinions of others derail the game plan you have designed for your race, goals and dreams.
Your dreams are yours. Your goals are yours. The ability to achieve them are also yours and no one else’s. If you have developed a plan of attack, stick with it. Run Your Race! If it doesn’t work, try again. Opinions of others can be of great value, but nothing is better than listening to, and following your heart and the plan you have developed.
Run Your Race, Chase Your Dreams and Live the Great Life You Were Created To Live!
